The Theory of a Musical Universe1





"The universe consists solely of waves of motion." relates Walter Russell in chapter 31 of A New Concept of the Universe. Another way of saying this is: "There exists nothing other than vibration." In Russell's statement lies the base for his next blast at orthodoxy's belief in a material universe: "Any theory which cannot find a fitting place within the wave has no other place for it in Nature." Hard words for sure but can they stand up to scrutiny? Is it possible to create a paradigm of nature that is structured entirely on wave or vibration theory? Investigating the pioneer work of John W. Keely's Sympathetic Vibratory Physics2 would lead us to believe this is so.





Logically speaking for such a paradigm to exist it would be couched entirely in vibration terms and concepts and would evolve from the simple to the complex addressing atomic phenomena all the way through human activity. This author believes this can be done albeit not exhaustively in so short a paper as this one. Inasmuch as a premise voiced ought to be demonstrated it will herein be shown how all vibration is intimately connected to all other vibration thereby demonstrating 1) the interconnectedness of all things and energies; 2) all things are they themselves built up from simple vibration to complex chords using universal principles of vibration alone; 3) there is no such thing as chaos in the universe; 4) all things exist by virtue of harmony among the vibrations that make it what it is; and 5) all things are intimately connected by sympathetic vibration.





Some of the information presented here was first published in 19913 and again in the author's book in 19944. This material represents the beginning of the science side of the "science and philosophy" equation. The universe vibrates from end to end and everything in it. Therefore if we are to investigate and understand this awesome spectacle we are obliged to investigate the nature of vibration.





If the universe were chaos there would be no harmony but only degrees of chaos. All sound and vibration would be just plain noise. Noise, therefore is unorganized vibration. But none can doubt there is order recognizable throughout nature from the uniformity of atomic structures and behaviors to spiral galaxies whose swirling arms of orderly stars span light years and billions of years of activity. This innate order has been long recognized, researched and categorized and may be found in music theory. In vibratory terms disorderly vibration can be organized in terms of music principles. Therefore music is organized vibration or sound set in orderly principles of structure and behavior. The principles that make sound into harmonious music are the same principles that govern all associating vibrations throughout the universe - and that includes everything that there is. It will be shown how any given vibration gives rise to a complex yet simple series of subordinate vibrations known generally as harmonics and these harmonics are relative to one another as are musical intervals.





It is generally recognized that everything is a result of vibration and each thing has its own chord of vibration or vibration signature. This state of vibratory condition is characterized in John Keely's Law of Corporeal Vibrations:





"All coherent aggregates when isolated from like bodies, or when immersed or confined in media composed of matter in a different state, vibrate at a given ascertainable pitch." John Keely5





It is a well known and accepted fact that any vibration as in a sound tone will give rise to its octave harmonics. These are the harmonics generally acknowledged by science as multiples of 2, which multiplication derives superharmonics, and divisions by 2 derive subharmonics. These types of harmonic products or results of 2 are called octave harmonics. What is not so generally acknowledged but nevertheless just as true is a tone will give rise to harmonics not divisible 2 but divisible by other numbers such as 3, 5, 7, etc. These other harmonics are developed from and within the octave harmonic series first mentioned by the octave harmonics interacting arithmetically with and among themselves and with the fundamental. These spontaneously and naturally occurring tones will add and subtract from each other in a perfectly orderly manner giving rise to summation and difference tones sometimes referred to as secondary, tertiary or higher harmonics. When these summation tones are very powerful they are referred to as beat tones or beat frequencies and are considered enharmonic. These arithmetically derived harmonics are characterized in Keely's Law of Cycles:





"Coherent aggregates harmonically united constitute centers of vibration bearing relation to the fundamental pitch not multiples of the harmonic pitch, and the production of secondary unions between themselves generate pitches that are discords, either in their unisons, or overtones with the original pitch; from harmony is generated discord, the inevitable cause of perpetual transformation." John Keely5





Vibrations are harmonious to one another when their aliquot parts (factors and/or products) are the same. When these harmonics form unisons or direct harmonic relations the two vibrating aggregates and their chords of vibration are said to be sympathetic to each other. This unison of frequency dictates that what happens to one vibratorily happens to the other simultaneously. In this case the vibrations of each aggregate or chord and the vibrations active between each are forming unisons or coincident harmonics and are therefore called sympathetic vibrations. Vibrations are considered enharmonic when their aliquot parts or factors are not similar. Most vibrations will have similar factors and/or products and a few dissimilar factors and/or products thereby giving rise to varying degrees of harmony or dissonance whichever the case may be.

Elsewhere in this website we have discussed the "templating" of water with electrical information, the presence of electromagnetic waves to influence the internal state of water molecules and how far infrared(FIR) waves have been used to structure water so that it can function in particular ways when it enters the bodies of humans or animals or even plant life.



World-class biochemists and others versed in the science of photochemistry understand that water stores "photons" or "packets" of energy. These are basically the same types of "photons" which we see on Star Trek which destroy other spaceships. Of course we don't have those types of weapons today, at least none that the military will admit...but the science is there to develop such technologies with the proper scientific knowledge and personnel.



All living cells, composed of between 70 and 90% water, emit biophotons which cannot be seen by the naked eye but can be measured by special equipment. Cells communicate via bursts of energy in the ultraviolet electromagnetic bands above the visible light spectrum, thus obscuring them from our vision. These energy emissions control vital bodily processes. Healthy and cancerous cells emit quite different photons of energy.



Even the DNA in the interior of each cell has resonant characteristics, transmitting information to new cells for proper replication. It is known that the DNA "spiral" which we all have seen in scientific pictures is resonant at 42 octaves about "middle C" on the tone scale.



If there is "bad" radiation entering cells, then the water in those cells tends to replicate or retransmit this bad information to adjacent cells, complicating the natural replication of healthy cells. The ability of water to store and retransmit such information, for good or for bad results, is therefore an undeniable characteristic of our body's cells.



The "purification" process used to treat water is efficient in removing potentially dangerous chemicals and ionic materials from water. However, even though these potential dangerous contaminants are removed, the water still remains, with electrical "imprints" of bad things that were in the water, attached to the water molecules before those chemicals were removed, or simply "imprinted" into the electrical characteristics of the water molecules from external sources.



All this may sound like science fiction but the number of successful applications of electronic templating by the likes of Dr. Lee Lorenzen and others is too voluminous to ignore. The US Food and Drug Administration, which tends to keep a lid on medical instruments and pharmaceutical products, has an exceptionally good handle on the inorganic and organic chemistry sciences, but for some reason they don't have it together as yet on the physical and electrical composition of water as described elsewhere in this website.



Many of those involved in the research areas of water memory and templating have had difficult times in bringing this developing science to the attention of the medical community. One has to believe that the solid entrenchment of the pharmaceutical industry in the American Medical Association as well as the interlocking financial nature of medical professionals with the pharmaceutical industries, pharmacies and other drug dispensories has much to do with the difficulty this science has found in going to work and solving serious medical problems.

Brainwave Frequencies - These are frequencies associated with various mental states. You can coax your brainwaves to a certain frequency, and in doing so, achieve the mental state associated with that frequency. These frequencies have been tested for use with pulsed orgone.

Binaural beats are the auditory brainstem responses which originate in the superior olivary nucleus of each hemisphere. They are the result of interaction of two different auditory impulses, originating in our ear.Normally below 1000 Hz and which differ in frequency between one and 30 Hz .For example, if a pure tone of 400 Hz is presented to the right ear, and a pure tone of 410 Hz is presented at the same time to the left ear, an amplitude modulated standing wave of 10 Hz, the difference between the two tones, is experienced .The two wave forms meshing in and out of phase within the superior olivary nuclei. This binaural beat is not heard in the ordinary sense of the word (the normal range of human hearing is 20-20,000 Hz). It is perceived as an auditory beat and theoretically, can be used to entrain specific neural rhythms through the frequency-following response (FFR). Because of this, it is theoretically possible to utilize a specific binaural-beat frequency as a consciousness management technique to entrain a specific cortical rhythm.

1. Music is nonverbal so can move through the brain's auditory cortex directly to the center of the limbic system. This system governs emotional experiences and basic metabolic responses such as body temperature, blood pressure and heart rate. It can help create new neuropathways in the brain, as well.



2. Music can activate the flow of stored memory and imagined material across the corpus collosum (bridge between left and right hemispheres of the brain) helping the two work in harmony. This stimulates the immune system.



3. Music can excite peptides in the brain and stimulate the production of endorphins, which are natural opiates secreted by the hypothalamus, which produces a feeling of natural euphoria, shifting mood and emotion.



Psychoacoustics is essentially the study of the perception of sound. This includes how we listen, our psychological responses, and the physiological impact of music and sound on the human nervous system. In the realm of psychoacoustics, the terms music, sound, frequency, and vibration are interchangeable. The study of psychoacoustics dissects the listening experience.



An important distinction is the difference between a psychological and a neurological perception. Slightly detuned tones can cause brain waves to speed up or slow down, for instance. Additionally, soundtracks that are filtered and gated (this is a sophisticated engineering process) create a random sonic event. It triggers an active listening response and thus tonifies the auditory mechanism, including the tiny muscles of the middle ear. As a result, sounds are perceived more accurately, and speech and communication skills improve. While a psychological response may occur with filtered and gated sounds, or detuned tones, the primary effect is physiological, or neurological, in nature.



Research on the neurological component of sound is currently attracting many to the field of psychoacoustics. A growing school of thought - based on the teachings of the French doctor Alfred Tomatis - values the examination of both neurological and psychological effects of resonance and frequencies on the human body.



Dr. Alfred Tomatis is considered the Father of Psychoacoustics. RESONANCE & ENTRAINMENT





• All atomic matter vibrates.



• Frequency is the speed at which matter vibrates.



• The frequency of vibration creates sound (sometimes inaudible).



• Sounds can be molded into music.







Resonance can be broadly defined as "the impact of one vibration on another." Literally, it means "to send again, to echo." To resonate is to "re-sound." Something external sets something else into motion, or changes its vibratory rate. This can have many different effects some subtle and some not so.







Another fascinating and important aspect of resonance is the process of entrainment. Entrainment, in the context of psychoacoustics, concerns changing the rate of brain waves, breaths, or heartbeats from one speed to another through exposure to external, periodic rhythms.







The most common example of entrainment is tapping your feet to the external rhythm of music. Just try keeping your foot or your head still when you are around fun, up-tempo rhythms. You will see that it is almost an involuntary motor response. However, tapping your feet or bopping your head to external rhythms is just the tip of the iceberg. While your feet might be jitterbugging, your nervous system may be getting a terrible case of the jitters!







Rhythmic entrainment is contagious: If the brain doesn't resonate with a rhythm, neither will the breath or heart rate. In this context, rhythm takes on new meanings. Not only is it entertaining, but rhythmic entrainment is a potent sonic tool as well - be it for motor function or other autonomic processes such as brainwave, heart, and breath rates. Alter one pulse (such as brain waves) with music, and the other major pulses (heart and breath) will dutifully follow.







Music alters the performance of the nervous system primarily because of entrainment. Entrainment is the rhythmic manifestation of resonance. With entrainment, a stronger external pulse does not just activate another pulse but actually causes the latter to move out of its own resonant frequency to match it.







Understanding the interlocking concepts of resonance and entrainment enables us to grasp the way external tone and rhythm can heal or create havoc. Sound affects glass and concrete as well as brain waves, motor response, and organic cells.







SONIC NEUROTECHNOLOGIES





Representing two distinct approaches to therapeutic sound, filtration/gating (F/G) and binaural beat frequencies (BBFs) currently define the growing field of "sonic neurotechnologies." This phrase was coined by Joshua Leeds to describe the arena of sound work that depends on the precise mechanical manipulation of sound waves to bring about desired changes in the psyche and physical body.







Filtration/gating (F/G) techniques have been honed in Tomatis clinics worldwide. By gradually gating and filtering out the lower range of music (sometimes up to 8000 Hz), and then adding the frequencies back in, a retraining of the auditory processing system occurs. The effects of filtration and gating are felt on a psychological, neurodevelopmental, and physical level. The application of sound stimulation has been effective in the remediation of many neurodevelopmental issues. Children and adults with learning/attention difficulties, developmental delays, auditory processing problems, sensory integration and perceptual challenges have experienced profound improvement. F/G is used in our The Listening Program.







Another approach to sound processing is the field of binaural beat frequencies (BBFs). By listening through stereo headphones to slightly detuned tones (i.e., sound frequencies that differ by a prescribed number of Hz), sonic brainwave entrainment takes place. Facilitating a specific range of brainwave states may assist in arenas such as pain reduction, enhanced creativity, or accelerated learning. BBFs are used in our light and sound unit as well as our Hemi-Sync music.







These two sonic neurotechnologies - used separately - have roots in neurology, physiology, and psychology. They must be used carefully and wisely. BBFS and F/G soundtracks can be powerful tools. Consequently, proper consideration must always be afforded.

SOUND STIMULATION WITH FILTRATION/GATING







In the broadest definition, sound stimulation can be defined as the excitement of the nervous system by auditory information. Sound stimulation auditory retraining narrows the focus. In this context, a precise application of electronically processed sound, through headphones, can have the effect of retraining the auditory mechanism to take in a wider spectrum of sound frequencies. An ear that cannot process tone properly is a problem of great magnitude. As discussed in previous chapters, sufficient auditory tonal processing is a prerequisite to normal auditory sequential processing.







• Auditory tonal processing (ATP) may be defined as the ability to differentiate between the tones utilized in language.







• Auditory sequential processing (ASP) is the ability to link pieces of auditory information together.







Auditory tonal processing is a basis for more complex levels of auditory sequential processing. ASP is the ability to receive, hold, process, and utilize auditory information using our short-term memory. As the foundation for short-term memory, ASP is one of the building blocks of thinking.







Sequential processing functions are fundamental to speech, language, learning, and other perceptual skills. The ability to interpret sound efficiently provides the neurological foundation for these sequential functions. Per neurodevelopmental specialist Robert J. Doman Jr., "many people who have experienced auditory processing deficits have seen their sequential functions return and/or improve when proper tonal processing is restored."







The primary sound application used in the remediation of impaired tonal processing was created by Alfred Tomatis. Further discussions cannot take place without absolute acknowledgment of his pioneering research. The current field of sound stimulation auditory retraining evolves from Tomatis's discoveries of the powerful effect of filtration and gating of sound.







In the context of auditory retraining, let's summarize these terms:







• Filtration means the removal of specific frequencies from an existing sound recording, be that the music of Mozart or a recording of a voice. Through the use of sound processing equipment, it is possible to isolate and mute certain frequency bandwidths. With filtration, any part of the low, mid, or high end of a recording can be withdrawn and reintroduced at will. On a visual level, imagine erasing the bottom part of a picture and then eventually drawing it back in. This is filtration.







• Gating refers to the creation of a random sonic event. This is accomplished by electronically processing a soundtrack so it unexpectedly jumps between the high and low frequencies. While not always pretty to listen to, the net effect of this sound treatment is an extensive exercising of the muscles of the middle ear. The combined process of filtration and gating creates a powerful auditory workout. And for good reason! The middle ear mechanism must work very hard to translate the complexity of the "treated" incoming sound.
